Karla A. Hirshorn, MD

Medical Director

Dr. Karla Hirshorn was born and raised in Hammonton, NJ.  She attended The College of New Jersey, in Ewing, NJ where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in biology and minors in chemistry and German in 2005.  She worked part time in the summer at Kessler Memorial Hospital of Hammonton, NJ and participated in two research projects regarding molecular genetics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in NJ and heat resistant protein expression at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  These experiences, coupled with the death of a dear friend to ovarian cancer, ultimately helped her to decide that she preferred hands-on interaction with patients in a medical setting.  While in college she met her future husband Elliot at a Bible study through Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and they got married shortly after graduation.

She then attended Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, earning her Doctor of Medicine degree as one of the top ten graduates in 2009 with induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Hobart Amory Hare Honor Societies.  From the beginning of her education, Karla’s desire was to be a family physician who would focus on health maintenance and disease prevention.  As her graduation drew near, her husband Elliot decided he would like to pursue a degree in Chiropractic.

From there Dr. Hirshorn moved to Iowa to complete her family medicine residency while her husband began his doctoral degree at Palmer College of Chiropractic.  She presented a poster on chronic opioid use policies to eliminate medication diversion at the annual Society of Teachers of Family Medicine conference in April of her second year.   She had the privilege of travelling to rural Haiti in January of 2012 to provide medical care through Community Health Initiative with various health professionals from around the United States during her third year.  In 2012, she finished her residency at the Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine Residency program in Davenport, IA after serving as a chief resident.  She completed her exams for board certification into Family Medicine prior to graduation.

Following graduation, Dr Hirshorn moved to South Carolina to take a full time position as a family physician at Laurens Family Practice in Laurens, SC where she worked for over 4.5 years.  She is currently the Associate Medical Director for Interim Hospice and the Medical Director at New Life Functional Neurology & Endocrinology.  In her free time, Dr. Hirshorn enjoys spending time with her family and friends, cooking, hiking, as well as enjoying the beautiful mountains and beaches of South Carolina.

Kathleen Wentworth,

Director of Patient Care

Kathleen grew up in Burlington, North Carolina. She moved to Greenville to attend college and graduated from Bob Jones University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education.  She spent several years in the education and childcare field, but found her true calling when she transitioned from the classroom to an office environment.  She loves serving in a support role and meeting the needs of those around her. In her spare time,  Kathleen enjoys spending time with friends, drinking coffee, shopping, decorating, baking, and reading on the beach.

A. Elliot Hirshorn, III, DC,
Director of Innovation

The vision for New Life began in the early 1990s when Dr. Hirshorn was a chiropractic patient.   His doctor demonstrated a passion that sparked an interest for conservative health care which, although not pursued initially, after many years, eventually became a calling.

Dr. Hirshorn graduated Summa Cum Laude from The College of New Jersey in 2004 with a bachelor of science degree in biology, a minor in chemistry and a certification to teach biological sciences.   He taught biology and anatomy & physiology at his alma mater, Deptford Township High School, in Deptford, NJ for five years.  Although Dr. Hirshorn thoroughly enjoys educating others, he felt God calling him to a new career as a in which he could serve others through education and functional health care.

Dr. Hirshorn graduated Summa Cum Laude from Palmer College with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree as Valedictorian of his class.  He has completed extensive post-doctoral training and is a Board-Certified Chiropractic Neurologist and practitioner of functional medicine.  He is always seeking to further is education to better help his patients and is currently pursuing the following: Diplomate status from the American Board of Clinical Nutrition, Board Certification in Neurofeedback from the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance and Fellowship status from the International Board of Functional Neurology.  These specialty fields provide a unique practice paradigm for Dr. Hirshorn that helps his patients with chronic conditions get better results with their care.

In what little spare time he has, Dr. Hirshorn enjoys spending time with his wife, Dr. Karla Hirshorn, traveling, hiking, exercising and relaxing.
